You look at a line of text and can read every word, but each letter seems to have a faint copy underneath it. Later that evening, headlights stretch into bright spikes across the road. Your eye chart may still say 20/20, yet your vision doesn't feel sharp.
This type of ghosting in vision can result from optical distortions that standard prescription glasses may not account for. At Vision On Park, advanced testing looks beyond basic refractive issues to study how light actually travels through your eyes. If your prescription seems right but your vision still looks wrong, a comprehensive eye exam can take a closer look at your eyes’ optics.
Why Clear Eye Charts Can Still Mean Distorted Vision
A 20/20 result measures how clearly you can identify letters at a set distance. It doesn’t measure every part of visual quality.
Some patients can read the smallest line on the chart and still notice:
- Ghost images around letters
- Shadows below or beside text
- Halos around lights
- Starbursts from headlights
- Glare in dim settings
- Smearing around high-contrast objects
- Vision that shifts after blinking
These symptoms may result from irregularities in how light travels through the eye.
What Are Higher-Order Aberrations?
Most glasses correct common focusing problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and regular astigmatism. These are called lower-order aberrations.
Higher-order aberrations, or HOAs, are more complex. They can affect how light passes through different parts of the eye and may be more noticeable in people with keratoconus, corneal scars, irregular corneas, or changes after eye surgery.
Instead of forming one sharp image, light may spread into nearby areas. That can create ghosting, smearing, glare, or halos.
Why Do Letters Have Shadows?
Dark text on a bright screen or page makes small optical distortions easier to notice.
If light doesn’t focus to a single, clear point, part of the image may appear slightly offset. You may see a faint copy of the letter underneath or beside the main image.
This is often called ghosting of vision.
A person can still read the letter correctly, which is why standard vision testing may not fully explain the complaint.
Why Are Starbursts Worse at Night?
Your pupils naturally get larger in the dark so more light can enter your eyes.
A larger pupil also lets light pass through a wider area of the eye’s optical system. If some of those areas bend light unevenly, headlights and streetlights may spread into rays, spikes, rings, or halos.
That’s why some patients notice much more glare or distortion while driving at night than they do during the day.
Why Can Vision Blur After a Blink?
Some specialty contact lenses can move slightly when you blink.
For a simple prescription, a small amount of movement may not make much difference. For a highly customized optical correction, alignment matters more.
If the lens shifts or rotates, vision may briefly blur until it settles again. This is one reason lens stability matters in patients who need advanced specialty optics.
How Custom Optics May Help
Vision On Park offers advanced tools for patients with complex vision problems.
EyePrintPRO uses a detailed impression of the eye to create a highly customized lens shape. Because the design follows the unique contours of the eye, it can provide strong positional stability for patients with irregular or hard-to-fit eyes.
Ovitz Aberration Control looks at how light travels through the eye. Wavefront aberrometry creates a detailed map of optical distortions that may not be captured by a standard prescription.
Think of it as an optical fingerprint.
When appropriate, this information can help guide a more personalized lens design that addresses both basic prescription needs and certain higher-order aberrations.
